The cool thing about Amazon is that once you get it going, it becomes mostly passive...and cumulative. As you write more, you earn more.
Over time, I kept expanding with other affiliate partners.

Does Amazon Associates still make sense, given the low commissions?

Honestly, there is some pretty bad and misleading advice out there, and I don't want you to fall for it.
Yes, Amazon commission %'s are low and they decreased them during the pandemic. (And, yes, I was disappointed).
BUT, more people are buying from Amazon. So, even after the commission drops, I've still been earning $4,000-$5,000 most months.
You see, we need to look at the WHOLE picture. While the commission rates may seem low, the conversion rates are much HIGHER.
You see an average conversion rate for affiliate programs is just 1%.
Do you know Amazon's conversion rates? It's 8-10%!
Why?
Because tons of people shop on and trust Amazon. They have a stored credit card on file, so it's easy. And, Amazon has mastered the art of the upsell.
If you send people to Amazon, you'll get credit for ALL of the items in their cart!
Sometimes, my customers buy 3-4 items. Other times, they buy 20-30, including many of their regular shopping items.
